Today, SSVP has grown into a global movement of lay volunteers and staff, united by a shared mission to serve those in need.
On Vancouver Island, SSVP’s work is rooted in these same values. For over a century, we have supported local communities with a range of services, from emergency food and housing assistance to thrift stores and inclusive programs for adults with disabilities. Our approach is simple: meet people where they are, offer personalized support, and empower them to move forward.

Society Statement
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is a Catholic lay organization with a mission to serve individuals and families in need, regardless of their background or beliefs. Guided by values of dignity, respect, and compassion, we provide practical assistance and emotional support to those facing life’s challenges.
Our work on Vancouver Island includes offering food, housing, clothing, and other essential services to those in need, while also addressing the root causes of poverty and injustice. Through the dedication of our volunteers, conferences, and community partners, we strive to uplift lives, foster hope, and build a stronger, more just community for all.
Our Organizational Structure
Guided by Mission, Driven by Community
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP) of Vancouver Island is a registered charity committed to serving those in need with compassion, respect, and integrity. Our structure ensures transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery across the island.
Legal and Governance Framework
SSVP of Vancouver Island was legally incorporated in 1953 under the British Columbia Society’s Act. We operate under a defined Constitution and Bylaws, which were updated in 2022 to reflect our ongoing commitment to good governance. Our operations are guided by both the Rules and Statutes of SSVP Canada and the regulations for registered charities in British Columbia and Canada.
Leadership and Accountability
Our society is led by an Executive Director, who oversees daily operations and ensures alignment with our mission. The Executive Director is accountable to a Board of Directors, which provides strategic guidance and oversight. The Board, in turn, is accountable to our Vincentian membership through the Vancouver Island Particular Council.
Vancouver Island Particular Council
The Vancouver Island Particular Council is a key part of our governance. It animates and coordinates the activities of local conferences—groups of volunteers within parishes that provide direct assistance to those in need. The Council also ensures that all conferences adhere to the values and principles of SSVP, while staying informed about changing community needs and new initiatives. It encompasses eleven conferences across Vancouver Island, from Campbell River to Victoria.
Working Together for Our Community
Our organization operates as part of an international community of Vincentians, following the vision of our founders, Blessed Frederic Ozanam and Saint Vincent de Paul. We collaborate not only within our society but also with other like-minded organizations and individuals who share our commitment to serving those in need.
SSVP is proud to be a trusted, community-focused organization that upholds accountability and transparency. Our structure allows us to adapt and respond to the evolving needs of our communities, with a steadfast commitment to our mission of charity and justice.
